Fraud can erode citizens' and businesses' confidence in our economic system, undermining tax morale and solidarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This, in turn, may result in those same citizens and businesses being more inclined to break the rules for their own gain. After all, other people do it too and the chances of getting caught are apparently slim. So, especially in times of crisis, the government does need to prioritise the fight against fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nevertheless, the government was still disadvantaged by a minimum of \u20ac7.3 billion in 2013. So says a report by consultancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers. Tax fraud took the crown in that year with an estimated amount of over \u20ac4.2 billion. By comparison, the \"large-scale\" allowance fraud by Bulgarians: \u20ac95 million over eight years, is very relative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Insurance companies are financially the second biggest victim of fraud after the government. In 2013, they are said to have been harmed to the tune of at least \u20ac900 million in the Netherlands. As a result, insurers are also suspicious when assessing claims and increasingly have them investigated by -external- investigation agencies. As a result, people who have actually suffered losses may also no longer be automatically assured of benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After all, it is often the people who think they have nothing to hide who can be careless in filling in the forms or giving answers. However, one observed contradiction in the statement itself or with that of a family member or colleague, can already be reason for the insurance company to refuse payment and terminate the policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Therefore, when making a claim, it is always good to proceed very carefully. If the claim is likely to be investigated further, it is always good to seek advice on the interrogation techniques and trick questions from the investigators. Perhaps especially if you have nothing to hide!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
